Marginally Attached and Discouraged Workers Pseudocode
Calculating the number of the marginally attached workers is more complicated than calculating unemployment or not in the labor force. To be marginally attached to the labor force, the following conditions must be met: 1) not currently looking for work (last 4 weeks) 2) looked for work in the last 12 months 3) want a job, and 4) could accept a job if one were available. Discouraged workers are marginally attached workers who list several specific reasons for not being able to get work.
The following pseudocode would produce a monthly series for the data using the most recent format of these variables in the CPS.
Variables: HRMONTH, HRYEAR4, PWSSWGT, PEMLR, PRDISC, PRWNTJOB, PEDWLKO, PELKAVL
If PEMLR is 5, 6, or 7 and PELKAVL is 1 and PEDWLKO is 1 and PRWNTJOB is 1
Marginally Attached =sum(PWSSWGT) by HRMONTH and HRYEAR4
If PEMLR is 5, 6, or 7 and PRDISC is 1
Discouraged worker=sum(PWSSWGT) by HRMONTH and HRYEAR4
