"Asset Building in the Heartland" will explore the development of asset-building policies, strategies, and programs within rural areas for low-income individuals and families.
This regional forum is the third in a series hosted by the Community Affairs offices of the Federal Reserve System and CFED entitled "Innovations in Asset-Building Policy, Products, and Programs."
The forum is a one day, invitation-only event targeted to policymakers, practitioners, and researchers focused on asset-building and related rural development initiatives.
While significant steps have been made towards creating asset-building opportunities for the urban poor over the past decade, much less attention has been focused on rural communities.
Rural areas present a unique set of challenges for asset building initiatives, both at the personal and community level. Dispersed and declining populations, physical and social isolation,
a weakening political voice, and limited community development and civic infrastructure are constraints often encountered. What strategies can address effectively these constraints?
What unique strengths do rural communities offer to support asset-building practice? How can strategies intentionally strengthen the interplay of community and individual needs and goals?
In response to these questions, "Building Assets in the Heartland" will provide a framework for understanding, assessing, and implementing asset-building strategies in rural communities. Through panel presentations,
facilitated discussions and working group sessions with leaders in the asset-building field, participants will both deepen their understanding of rural asset-building practice and develop recommendations for stakeholders in the field.
Please join us for this opportunity to contribute to the development of new strategies for building assets in our rural communities.
