All essays must be submitted by April 6, 2007.
Please review submission requirements prior to submitting your essay.
 
RULES
1. A written essay is the only literary form accepted (no poems, plays, songs, etc).
2. Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each student.
3. Essays must reflect the student's own research, writing, and original thinking.
 
ELIGIBILITY
The Essay Contest is open to all 9th- through 12th-grade students in the Tenth District. Based on residency, students will compete in regional competitions in Kansas City (Kansas and western Missouri), Denver (Colorado, northern New Mexico, and Wyoming), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), and Omaha (Nebraska). Students may enter individually, or teachers may assign the essay as a classroom lesson. Students who have family members employed by the Federal Reserve System or its Board of Directors are not eligible to participate in the essay contest.
Each entrant must be under the supervision and direction of a teacher and have parental or guardian approval.
 
JUDGING CRITERIA
Essays will be judged by Federal Reserve staff and economic education professionals using these five criteria:
1. Comprehension: How well does the essay reflect a thorough understanding of the economic issues of the topic? (1-20 points)
2. Organization: Does the argument follow a logical and easily understood progression? Does the corroborating evidence support the essay's main points? (1-20 points)
3. Conclusions: Do the conclusions follow logically from the argument? Are the conclusions compelling? (1-20 points)
4. Creativity: Were diverse resources and ideas used to develop the main points? (1-20 points)
5. Writing Style: Were concise language and correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation used? (1-20 points)
