Shred Challenge Student Competition
Shred Challenge is an annual competition that encourages financial education while putting a twist on traditional economic lessons.
Students from the Kansas City area are challenged to create original art using approximately $800 in finely shredded currency from the Federal Reserve. In October, Kansas City Fed staff visit art classes to discuss financial awareness. Students are then given the contest materials and are asked to create artwork that relates to a specific financial awareness theme.
The challenge
Each participant receives five small bags of shredded currency and a mat board surface. Art can be two or three dimensional and must stay within the mat board. All mediums are welcome, but the art must be at least 60 percent shredded currency.
In November, students present their projects for judging at the Kansas City Fed headquarters.
The winners
The top five winning students earn U.S. savings bonds and the top school receives a trophy. The winning entries and artists’ names are displayed in the Kansas City Fed’s Money Museum. Meet the 2011 Shred Challenge winners.
