FED CHALLENGE COMPETITION DISCONTINUED IN THE TENTH DISTRICT

After considerable thought and a thorough evaluation of current economic education programming, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and its three branch offices, have decided to discontinue involvement in the high school Fed Challenge competition beginning this 2007-2008 season. As an alternative, we plan to shift our resources to developing a new academic competition that will reach a broader range of educators and students while reducing their preparation time and aligning the competition objectives more closely to economics, government, civics, and related content standards in our seven-state region.

The Bank remains committed to supporting economic and financial education and enhancing the climate for these subjects in our region. We understand the importance of educating teachers and students about the Federal Reserve and the U.S. economy and recognize the value of promoting advanced learning strategies for students. Therefore, we plan to use the current Fed Challenge program as a foundation for creating a new team-based competition that continues to promote critical thinking and a greater understanding of the Federal Reserve, its functions, and how the economy works.

We appreciate your interest and/or past involvement with the program and would like to incorporate your feedback in the development of a new competition, to begin during the 2008-2009 school year. Please stay tuned for details about the new program. We look forward to working with you and your students on our new academic competition next season!

If you have questions or would like to offer suggestions regarding the new competition, please email them to EconomicEducation@kc.frb.org.
